Why Liechtenstein matters

Liechtenstein is one of Europe's smallest countries, so small that you can cross it in a morning, and that is half the charm. A princely castle watches over the capital, Vaduz, a pocket-sized town with excellent art museums, and a few minutes later you can be on a mountain trail or ski slope with views over the Rhine valley. It is a funny, friendly place to collect a stamp, see a castle and breathe mountain air before moving on to Switzerland or Austria.

Talking points

  • It sits between Switzerland and Austria and uses the Swiss franc
  • The ruling princely family lives in the castle above Vaduz
  • The country is small enough to cross in a short bus ride
  • Hiking in summer and skiing in winter are easy to reach from the capital
