Why Monaco matters

Monaco is tiny, and that is exactly the point. In an area you can cross on foot in under an hour you get a clifftop palace, a harbour full of yachts, a belle epoque casino and a Formula 1 race that uses the streets as its track. It is one of the smallest countries in the world and one of the most densely built, with towers stacked up the hillside. Visit for a day, wander the old town on its rock, stroll the gardens and watch the superyachts. It is glamorous, but also surprisingly walkable and easy to enjoy on a normal budget.

Talking points

  • It is one of the smallest countries in the world.
  • The Monaco Grand Prix is raced on ordinary city streets.
  • The Prince's Palace sits on a rock above the harbour.
  • The Oceanographic Museum hangs on the side of a cliff.
  • You can see most of the country in a single day on foot.
