Why San Marino matters

San Marino is a tiny republic perched on a rocky mountain in Italy, with a claim to be among the oldest republics in the world. Its capital climbs Mount Titano in a tangle of stone lanes and fortified walls, crowned by medieval towers that you can walk between. On a clear day you can see the Adriatic Sea and the hills of Emilia-Romagna. It is small, calm and easy to cover in a day, with souvenir shops, small museums and a government palace with its own guards. Come for the views and the sense of a place that is very much its own.

Talking points

  • It claims to be among the oldest republics in the world.
  • The historic centre and Mount Titano are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Three towers crown the ridge of Mount Titano.
  • On a clear day you can see the Adriatic Sea.
  • A cable car links the lower town to the historic centre.
