Why Aalborg matters

Aalborg sits on the Limfjord in the north of Jutland, and it has reinvented its old industrial waterfront as a place for concerts, museums and walks along the water. It is a good base for the wild north: dunes, lighthouses and the beaches at Skagen are within reach. Close to town there is also a hillside covered with Viking-age graves marked by ship-shaped stones, a quiet and atmospheric place that tells you how long people have lived here.

Talking points

  • The Limfjord waterfront is the city's social centre in summer.
  • A Viking-age burial ground with ship-shaped stone settings lies just north of the centre.
  • It is the usual gateway for visiting Skagen and the north coast.
