Aarhus

Denmark's second city on the Jutland coast: a lively student town with great museums, a harbourfront and an old-town open-air museum.

Why Aarhus matters

Aarhus is young, creative and easy to walk. Students fill the cafés of the Latin Quarter, the old harbour has been turned into a place for food and swimming, and the art museum wears a rainbow on its roof. A short ride away is a museum that tells the story of Denmark's prehistory, and in the middle of town an entire old Danish town has been rebuilt street by street. It is a good counterpart to Copenhagen if you want something more relaxed, still with real cultural weight.

Talking points

  • A rainbow-coloured circular walkway crowns the ARoS art museum.
  • Den Gamle By recreates Danish town life through the centuries.
  • It was a European Capital of Culture in 2017.
