Why Alberta Street Art Nouveau District matters

Riga was booming in the early 20th century and spent that wealth on apartment buildings dressed in extravagant Art Nouveau decoration. Alberta iela is the best street to see it, with sculpted faces, peacocks, sphinxes and swirling ornament on every facade. Stand in the middle and turn slowly. It is a short walk from the old town and free to enjoy.

Talking points

  • Riga has one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau buildings in the world.
  • Many facades are covered in sculpted faces, masks and mythical creatures.
