Why Riga Central Market matters

Walk in and you are standing inside an airship hangar. The five enormous halls were built to house Zeppelins and later moved to the market, and each hall now has its own food: fish, meat, dairy, vegetables, bread. Try smoked fish, rye bread and the pickles. Outdoors the stalls spill out with berries and flowers. It is a true local market, not a tourist show.

Talking points

  • The halls were originally built as Zeppelin hangars.
  • Each hall has its own specialty, such as smoked fish, dairy or vegetables.
