Why Ban Jelacic Square matters

This is the city's meeting point. Say 'meet me under the clock' and everyone knows where. Trams cross the open space, the Upper Town rises to one side and the pedestrian streets lead off in all directions. Standing here at any time of day, you watch real Zagreb life: office workers, students and grandparents crossing paths. In December it turns into one of the city's busiest festive spots.

Talking points

  • Locals use it as the default meeting spot.
  • An equestrian statue of a 19th-century governor stands at its centre.
  • Pedestrian streets and Dolac market are minutes away.
