Why St Mark's Church matters

You will have seen this roof on postcards before you arrive. Patterned tiles in red, white, blue and yellow form the coats of arms of the country and the city, sitting above a Gothic church on a quiet square. Government buildings stand around the square, so it feels solemn rather than touristy. The roof is best viewed from outside, as the church interior is often closed.

Talking points

  • The roof tiles display Croatia's and Zagreb's coats of arms.
  • The square is surrounded by government buildings.
  • It is one of the oldest churches in the Upper Town.
