Why Bergenhus Fortress matters

Bergenhus is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved royal fortresses. At its heart stands Haakon's Hall, a stone banquet hall dating to the 13th century, along with a stout tower that you can climb. It once guarded the harbour, and today the grounds are a peaceful green spot beside the sea. It's an easy walk from Bryggen.

Talking points

  • Haakon's Hall dates to the medieval period.
  • It stands at the entrance to the harbour.
  • Bryggen is a short walk away.
