Why Black Church matters

The Black Church rises above the old town as the symbol of Brasov. It got its name after a fire in the seventeenth century blackened its walls. Inside you'll find a huge organ and a collection of Anatolian carpets given by merchants over the centuries. It's a striking sight from the outside and a calm, atmospheric space within.

Talking points

  • The name comes from smoke damage after a fire.
  • A collection of old Oriental carpets hangs inside.
  • It's one of the largest Gothic churches in the region.
