Why Brasov matters

Brasov looks like a postcard from central Europe: pastel houses around Council Square, a Gothic church that gives the town its landmark, and forested mountains rising right behind the rooftops. Saxon merchants built it, and the old walls and bastions still stand. It's the easiest base for Bran Castle, Rasnov, Prejmer and Sinaia, and the town itself is a pleasure to wander on foot, with a cable car up to a giant hillside sign.

Talking points

  • Council Square is the heart of town, surrounded by pastel buildings and terrace cafes.
  • The mountain Tampa rises straight above the old town.
  • Bran, Rasnov, Prejmer and Peles are all an easy day trip away.
