Why Covadonga Lakes matters

Above the shrine of Covadonga, a steep road leads to two alpine lakes, Enol and Ercina. Cows with bells wander the pastures, and the surrounding peaks reflect in the water. The shrine below, set in a cave, is important to Spanish history and faith. In high season, access to the lakes may be restricted to buses.

Talking points

  • The lakes are surrounded by mountain pastures and peaks.
