Why Picos de Europa matters

The Picos de Europa rise only a short distance from the Atlantic, so peaks and sea almost share the horizon. Limestone massifs, deep gorges, green meadows and villages where cheese is aged in caves make this one of Spain's best mountain regions. There is a cable car at Fuente De, and hikes for all levels. Expect rain and mist as well as sunshine.

Talking points

  • The mountains are close to the coast, so the climate can change quickly.
  • Cabrales, a strong blue cheese, is made in the region.
  • The Cares Gorge trail is a classic hike.
