Why Delos matters

Delos was one of the most sacred places in ancient Greece, said to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Today it is an open-air museum of ruins: mosaic floors, a row of stone lions and the foundations of a thriving trading city. Boats run from Mykonos. No one lives on the island, so bring water and a hat.

Talking points

  • Myth says Apollo and Artemis were born here.
  • Mosaics survive in ruined houses.
  • The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
