Why Fira matters

Fira clings to the edge of a huge volcanic caldera. White buildings with blue domes stack above cliffs, and the sea sits hundreds of feet below. Walk the cliff path to Firostefani and Imerovigli, watch cruise boats look tiny, and enjoy sunsets from a terrace. It can be crowded in summer, but the view never really stops being impressive. Early morning is the quietest time.

Talking points

  • The caldera is the flooded crater of a huge volcanic eruption.
  • The cliff path to Imerovigli gives some of the best views on the island.
  • Visit early in the morning to beat the crowds.
