Why Flåm matters

Flåm is tiny, but its setting is spectacular: steep mountain walls rise on all sides above a still fjord. It's the end of the famous Flåm Railway, one of the steepest regular railways in the world, which winds down from the mountains past waterfalls. Cruises to Gudvangen and the Nærøyfjord start from the harbour. It's busy in summer, quiet in winter, and always scenic.

Talking points

  • The Flåm Railway is a major scenic rail journey.
  • Fjord cruises depart from the harbour.
  • Cruise ships can make it very busy in summer.
