Why Flåm Railway matters

The Flåm Railway runs for about twenty kilometres between Flåm on the fjord and Myrdal in the mountains. It climbs a very steep gradient through tunnels, past waterfalls, along cliff edges and over valleys, and trains stop for a photo stop at a major waterfall. It's a classic part of the Norway in a Nutshell route.

Talking points

  • The line includes a very steep gradient for a regular railway.
  • A photo stop is made at a waterfall.
  • It links with the main Oslo–Bergen railway at Myrdal.
