Why Frauenkirche Dresden matters

The Frauenkirche collapsed after the 1945 bombing and lay as a pile of stones for nearly fifty years. Rebuilt in the 2000s, it stands again with its huge stone dome, and you can spot old blackened stones among the new light ones. Climb the dome for a city view, and notice how the church became a symbol of reconciliation between former enemies.

Talking points

  • It lay in ruins for decades after the war
  • Old darkened stones are visible among the new
  • Its dome can be climbed for city views
