Why Gran Via matters

The Gran Via is Madrid's Broadway, a long avenue cutting through the old town, lined with grand early-twentieth-century buildings. Look up at the wedding-cake facades, the domes and the sculpted figures. By night the theatre marquees light up and the pavements fill. It is the best street for people-watching and for catching a musical.

Talking points

  • It was built in the early twentieth century by tearing down old streets.
  • Many of the buildings are in styles like Art Deco and Beaux-Arts.
  • The avenue is known for its theatres and musicals.
