Why Reina Sofia Museum matters

The Reina Sofia is where Spanish twentieth-century art comes alive, and its centrepiece is Picasso's Guernica. The huge black, white and grey painting responds to the bombing of a Basque town during the Civil War, and standing in front of it is quietly powerful. The museum also holds works by Dali and Miro. Look at the glass lifts on the outside of the old hospital building too.

Talking points

  • Picasso's Guernica is displayed here in its own room.
  • The building was once a hospital before it became a museum.
  • The collection also features Dali, Miro and many other Spanish modernists.
