Why Haapsalu matters

Haapsalu is an old spa and resort town with wooden villas, a seafront promenade and a castle of the bishops. It had a reputation among the Russian elite in the 19th century, and the composer Tchaikovsky is said to have spent time here. Today it is a relaxed place to stroll the seafront and eat fresh fish.
