Why Herculaneum matters

Herculaneum was a wealthy seaside town buried deeper in volcanic material, so wooden beams, mosaics and upper floors survived. It is smaller and quieter than Pompeii, and manageable in a couple of hours. It's an excellent choice if you want detail without the crowds.

Talking points

  • Wood and upper storeys survived thanks to the way it was buried.
  • It's much smaller and quieter than Pompeii.
  • Reachable on the local train from Naples.
  • Two hours is enough.
