Why Pompeii Archaeological Park matters

Walk the streets of a real Roman town as it stood on the day Mount Vesuvius buried it. You can step into houses with painted walls, bakeries, shops, a theatre and even an ancient fast-food counter. It is huge, so bring water, a hat and good shoes, and plan at least half a day.

Talking points

  • The town was buried by volcanic ash in the first century AD.
  • Painted houses, shops and streets are remarkably intact.
  • It is big and exposed, with little shade.
  • Reachable by local train from Naples or Sorrento.

Good to know: Arrive early, wear a hat and carry water; summer midday is very hot.
