Why Interlaken matters

Interlaken means between the lakes, and that is exactly where it sits, with Lake Thun on one side and Lake Brienz on the other. The town is a launchpad for the famous Jungfrau region, with trains to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen and the high railway to Jungfraujoch. Paragliding, hiking, canyoning and boat trips fill the days, and the evenings are for a cheese-heavy dinner.

Talking points

  • Two lakes and three famous peaks are within reach of the town centre.
  • It is the main hub for adventure sports in the Swiss Alps.
  • Trains and cable cars fan out to dozens of villages and viewpoints.
