Why Kalambaka matters

Kalambaka is a small, friendly town at the foot of one of Greece's most dramatic landscapes. Above the rooftops, enormous sandstone pillars rise out of the plain, and monasteries sit on top of them. It is where you sleep, eat grilled meat in a taverna and plan your sunrise and sunset viewpoints. The town is modest, and everything revolves around the rocks, but that is exactly what makes it a good stop.

Talking points

  • It is the main base for visiting Meteora, with plenty of small hotels and tavernas.
  • The rock towers can be seen from the town streets.
  • Its sister village Kastraki sits even closer under the cliffs.
