Why Landmannalaugar matters
Landmannalaugar is a highland playground of mountains streaked in pink, yellow, green and blue by volcanic minerals. Lava fields roll out between peaks, and a hot stream where you can bathe sits next to a camp. It's the starting point for the Laugavegur trek. The roads are rough and open only in summer, so many people come on highland buses or guided tours.
