Why Las Teresitas Beach matters

Las Teresitas is a long, palm-fringed beach just north of Santa Cruz. The golden sand was brought from the Sahara, in contrast to the island's usual black volcanic sand. It has calm water, protected by a breakwater, and is a favourite with locals at weekends.

Talking points

  • The golden sand was imported from the Sahara.
  • A breakwater keeps the water calm.
  • It's close to the capital.
