Why Long Market and Neptune's Fountain matters

The Long Market was the heart of one of the richest trading cities of the Baltic. Facades here are painted, gilded and carved, and in the middle stands a bronze Neptune, who has been holding his trident here for centuries. Gdańsk was heavily damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt, so what you see is both a restoration and a statement. Walk from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate and then out to the river.

Talking points

  • The Neptune fountain is the symbol of Gdańsk.
  • The Golden Gate at one end and the Green Gate at the other frame the street.
