Why Mariacka Street matters

Mariacka is the prettiest street in Gdańsk, a cobbled lane running down to the river with carved stone gargoyles and raised terraces in front of the houses. It is also the best place to see amber at work, because many of the small shops here are also workshops. Amber from the Baltic has been prized for thousands of years, so this is a fine place to buy something small, or just to browse.

Talking points

  • Many shops on the street make their own amber jewellery.
  • The raised stone terraces in front of the houses are a local specialty.
