Why Lublin matters

Lublin is an unhurried university city in eastern Poland, and a good place to see what the country looks like away from the big tourist circuit. The Old Town has colourful townhouses and narrow lanes, and the castle on the hill holds a small chapel covered in rare Byzantine-style frescoes. Lublin also has a deep Jewish history and, on the edge of the city, the Majdanek memorial, which is a sober place to learn about the Second World War. It makes a good stop on the way to Zamość.

Talking points

  • Lublin Castle's chapel has rare medieval frescoes in a Byzantine-Ruthenian style.
  • The city was an important centre of Jewish learning before the war.
  • It is less crowded than Kraków and Warsaw, with a lively student scene.
