Why Majdanek State Museum matters

Majdanek lies on the edge of Lublin, close to the houses of a modern neighbourhood, and that closeness is part of what you notice. The camp has been preserved as a memorial, with watchtowers, barracks and a large mausoleum. It is quieter than Auschwitz and receives far fewer visitors, but it is just as serious. Visit with respect and allow time.

Talking points

  • The camp sits right next to residential streets.
  • The site is preserved as a state museum.
