Bock Casemates
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Miles of tunnels carved into the cliffs, once used to defend the city.
City · Luxembourg · Luxembourg
A fortress capital on dramatic cliffs, with deep gorges, old casemates and a modern European quarter.
For storytellers
Luxembourg City sits on a rocky plateau cut by two river gorges, and the drama of the setting is the first thing you notice. For centuries it was fortified, earning the nickname Gibraltar of the North, and the old defences, bridges and tunnels are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is also a hub for European institutions and banking, but its old quarter is compact, walkable and full of viewpoints.
