Why Luxembourg matters

Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest countries, yet it delivers a dramatic landscape and a fascinating history. Its capital perches on cliffs above deep gorges, ringed by the remains of one of Europe's greatest fortresses. Further out you find hilltop castles, wooded valleys and rock-lined hiking trails. It is a multilingual crossroads between France, Germany and Belgium, and the village of Schengen gave its name to Europe's border-free travel area. Public transport is free, which makes exploring wonderfully simple.

Talking points

  • Public transport across the country is free for everyone.
  • The capital's old quarter and fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Luxembourgish, French and German are all in everyday use.
  • Castles and wooded valleys lie within an hour of the capital.
  • The village of Schengen lent its name to Europe's border-free travel area.
