Why Malbork matters

Malbork is a quiet town that exists in the shadow of one enormous castle. The Teutonic Knights built it in the Middle Ages as their headquarters, and it grew into a complex of walls, moats, towers and halls, all in red brick. Most visitors come on a day trip from Gdańsk, an easy train ride, and spend several hours wandering through the courtyards and the museum rooms inside. It is worth arriving early and walking along the river afterwards for the classic view of the castle from the far bank.

Talking points

  • The castle was the capital of the Teutonic Order, a medieval military religious order.
  • Gdańsk is about an hour away by train.
