Malbork Castle
The world's largest brick castle complex, built by the Teutonic Order in the Middle Ages.
For storytellers
Why Malbork Castle matters
Come up the path and the walls simply keep going. Malbork was the headquarters of the Teutonic Knights, a military order that ruled much of the Baltic coast in the Middle Ages, and it grew into a fortress city of courtyards, towers and great halls, built almost entirely from red brick. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and has been rebuilt over decades. Plan a half day, and walk across the bridge for the postcard view from the river.
Talking points
- The castle is among the largest brick fortresses in the world.
- It was the seat of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order.
