Why Notre-Dame de la Garde matters

Known locally as the Bonne Mère, this basilica sits on the highest natural point in town with a golden statue of the Virgin on its bell tower. Sailors have prayed here for centuries, and inside you will find models of ships left as offerings. The views over the harbour and islands are superb.

Talking points

  • Ship models hang inside as offerings from sailors.
  • The terrace has the best panoramic view in the city.
  • Locals call it the Bonne Mère.
