Why Paphos matters

Paphos is the part of Cyprus with the most ancient treasure. In the old harbour area, mosaic floors from Roman villas lie open under roofs, and a small castle guards the quay. A short drive away, rock-cut tombs from the Hellenistic era are carved into the ground. The coast is linked to the myth of Aphrodite's birth. It makes a good base for the west of the island.

Talking points

  • Roman mosaics in Paphos are among the best in the Mediterranean.
  • Rock-cut royal tombs lie just north of the harbour.
  • Aphrodite's legend is tied to this coast.
