Why Plovdiv matters

Plovdiv is often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The sense of age is easy to feel: a Roman theatre carved into a hill, Revival-era houses in the old town with overhanging upper floors, and a creative quarter full of cafes and street art. It was a European Capital of Culture in 2019, and the arts scene shows. It is relaxed, walkable and very photogenic.

Talking points

  • A Roman theatre is still used for concerts.
  • The old town is full of colourful Revival-era houses.
  • The Kapana quarter is the creative, nightlife heart.
