Why Pont Saint-Bénézet matters

The old bridge of Avignon, immortalised in a nursery rhyme, was washed away by floods and never fully rebuilt. Four arches still jut into the Rhône, with a small chapel on one pier. Visit with the palace on the same ticket, and walk out along the bridge for a river view.

Talking points

  • A famous song is about this bridge.
  • Only four arches survive.
  • A chapel stands on one pier.
