Why Poznań matters

Poznań is one of the places where the Polish state began, and it still carries that sense of history. The Old Market Square is a postcard of Renaissance and Baroque townhouses around a splendid town hall, and every day at noon a pair of mechanical goats pop out of the clock tower to butt heads. A short walk east takes you over the river to the cathedral island, a quiet place with a very old religious tradition. It is a good, less touristy alternative to Kraków.

Talking points

  • Two mechanical goats emerge from the town hall clock at noon and lock horns.
  • The cathedral island is one of the cradles of the early Polish state.
  • Poznań is a university and trade-fair city, so food and nightlife are lively.
