Why Ribe matters

Ribe is one of those towns where time seems to have slowed. Narrow lanes of crooked, half-timbered houses lead to a big Romanesque cathedral with a tower you can climb for a view over the flat marshland. People traded here in the Viking Age, and you can still feel that old trading-town atmosphere. Out beyond the town the Wadden Sea stretches away, a vast tidal landscape of mudflats and birds that is a World Heritage area.

Talking points

  • Trade took place here as far back as the Viking Age.
  • You can climb the cathedral tower for a view over the marshes.
  • The nearby Wadden Sea is a vast tidal landscape rich in birdlife.
