Why Rila Monastery matters

Rila Monastery sits in a forested valley with mountain peaks all around. Its courtyard is ringed with wooden balconies and arches painted in red, white and black stripes, and the church is covered with colourful frescoes. It was founded in the tenth century, though the present buildings are mostly from the nineteenth. It's the spiritual heart of Bulgaria and a UNESCO site.
