Why Royal Castle in Warsaw matters

This was the seat of Poland's rulers and later of its parliament, and its story is a rollercoaster. The Germans blew it up in the Second World War, and in the decades after it was rebuilt, paid for in large part by donations from ordinary people. Inside you can walk through grand state rooms, see portraits and Warsaw cityscapes by the painter Bellotto, and learn how the monarchy shaped Poland.

Talking points

  • The castle was rebuilt thanks in large part to donations from the public.
  • It was a royal residence and the seat of Poland's parliament.
