Why Saint-Malo matters

Saint-Malo was a base for privateers and explorers, and you can still walk the top of its granite walls with the sea crashing below. Inside are cobbled streets, crêperies and shops. At low tide you can walk across the sand to small fortified islands.

Talking points

  • Most of the walled city was rebuilt after the Second World War.
  • Cartier set sail from here for Canada in the 16th century.
  • Savoury buckwheat galettes are the local meal.
