Why The Kelpies matters

These two enormous steel horse heads rise beside the canal, each as tall as a tower block. They honour the working horses that once pulled barges through Scotland, and they look best at dusk when lights shine on the metal. You can walk around them freely, or take a guided tour that goes inside.

Talking points

  • They are about 30 metres tall.
  • They stand beside the Forth and Clyde Canal.
  • Tours go inside one sculpture.
