Why Toledo matters

Toledo rises on a rocky bend of the Tagus river, a maze of lanes, towers and church spires that looks much as it did in the paintings of El Greco. For centuries Christians, Muslims and Jews lived here side by side, and you can still see mosque, synagogue and cathedral within a few minutes of each other. It is an easy day trip from Madrid, but staying the night and seeing it empty in the evening is even better.

Talking points

  • The whole old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Toledo is known for steel blades and marzipan.
  • El Greco lived and worked here, and several of his paintings are still in the city.
