Why Trevi Fountain matters

You hear the water before you see it. The Trevi Fountain fills one side of a small square with sculpted rocks, rushing water and mythological figures. Tradition says that if you throw a coin over your shoulder, you will return to Rome. Come very early or late to avoid the crowds.

Talking points

  • Tradition says tossing a coin guarantees a return to Rome.
  • The fountain was completed in the 18th century in the baroque style.
  • The coins collected are donated to charity.
  • It is most atmospheric at night or at dawn.
