Why Trondheim matters

Trondheim was once Norway's capital and its spiritual heart, and the great cathedral still stands as proof. Today it is a relaxed student city on a river bend, with old wooden warehouses on stilts, a pretty bridge to the Bakklandet district and plenty of cafes. It is a good midpoint on a trip between south and north, and a quieter alternative to the bigger cities.

Talking points

  • Nidaros Cathedral is often described as the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world.
  • Bakklandet has cobbled lanes and cosy cafes.
  • The old warehouses along the river stand on stilts.
