Why Wawel Royal Castle matters

For centuries this limestone hill above the river was the centre of Polish power. The complex combines the royal castle, with its Renaissance arcaded courtyard, and the cathedral where kings were crowned and buried. You can walk the grounds for free and then choose which exhibitions to go inside. Legend says a dragon once lived in a cave beneath the hill, and a metal statue now breathes fire next to the river.

Talking points

  • The cathedral on the hill is where Polish kings were crowned and many are buried.
  • A dragon statue by the river breathes fire at intervals, linked to a local legend.
